SD40-2 Leading on the Transcon!
Author: slug96

It's 2017 and I caught a SD40-2 on Transcon. Who would of thought that?

Whenever Amtrak has a mechanical issue with one of their locomotives, they'll usually get a locomotive from the freight companies; usually a modern locomotive. Yesterday, while Amtrak was coming into Albuquerque, one of Amtrak's units went dead. There were no modern road locomotives in the yard at Albuquerque, and no time to send a locomotive up from Belen to meet the train. So, they added the BNSF 1731, an EMD SD40-2. Built in October of 1980, this locomotive used to carry the blue and yellow colors of Santa Fe as ATSF #5163. It would be repainted into the BNSF's first paint scheme after the merger of 1996. Today, it gets one more shot of pulling a train over its former territory. I was able to catch the train at Hackberry and Kingman. Lucky for me, with a freight unit on Amtrak, the train can't do 90 MPH between Hackberry and Kingman as freight locomotives are maxed out at 70 MPH. That made it easier for me to keep up with him.

Thanks for the photos, David.

Any idea how far the BNSF leader would stay on it?

Can't imagine that it won't make it all the way to LA.

Is there a reason the freight locomotive always in front of the train.

Do they ever put the freight locomotive behind or between the Amtrak engines?

Yes. HEP to coaches. Freight unit does not have connections for power for coaches

Amazing photos and moment captured that probably will never happen again. All of the photos are composed with a nod to the history of the Santa Few in NM. Images of the WEEK

It did make it to LA. I saw it this afternoon at the Commerce Metrolink Station.

I assume the unit stayed on all the way because 1. the Amtrak unit is not going to heal up on its own and 2. if the freight unit is running fine, why change it out again and waste more time.

Thanks for getting these nice photos. I especially like #1, with the mix of SD-40, a nice paint scheme and the Santa Fe on the bridge, and Photo 2 implies the speed of the Transcon. Thanks for taking and posting these.

Anybody know how much this Tow job costs Amtrak?
