I checked out the ATSF 2921 in Modesto this morning. A contracted crew of about eight men were on site working. The fence and weeds around the locomotive have been removed, creating a nice wide-open photo opportunity for a morning shot. I haven't been able to get a photo like this of the locomotive for 35 or more years! A worker on the scene told me that they have to have the locomotive ready to move by the first of July.

Good to see that the old girl is finally getting moved out of the flood plain. As I recall, some years back a crew from Barstow,I think, removed a lot of sheet metal and other parts which were put in storage in the old Rainbo Bread building for safe keeping. I believe that was when the Asbestos was removed as well. It would be nice to see the engine cosmetically restored and perhaps a pole barn built over the engine to help protect her from the weather..I still remember when I was about in first grade back in the early sixties going to the little park with my dad and climbing all over the engine..Glad she was saved ..

Here's a copy of the news article from 1960 published in the Modesto Bee newspaper, showing just how this huge locomotive came to rest down the hill in a childrens' park. Perhaps the first time in history that a 4-8-4 ever went down a 15% grade!
