Western Railroad Discussion > An F Unit SandwichDate: 06/23/17 03:45 An F Unit Sandwich Author: robj A couple of friends went to Peoria, IL to catch the Keokuk Jct F units. I went down to join them meeting at Mapleton on Monday, the "sure" day to catch them leaving to go West. No F's. Driving West along the line I found a crew rebuilding a crossing in Cuba and learn the "F"'s are at La Harpe going east at 1:30. They set it up with with 2003 leading and for good measure add 2032 to the rear. So with mid day sun and the F's sandwiched between GP-20U's they head east from La Harpe. (2003-1752-1761-1750-2032)
I will start with a few shots from the end of the run, then three a little earlier, sparing the mid-day sun. The three "F"'s go to East Peoria on tuesday. 1) approaching Cuba 2) Glasford 3) outside Mapleton Robert Jordan Date: 06/23/17 03:54 Re: An F Unit Sandwich Author: cozephyr Glad to see the Keokuk Jct F A-B-A F-units are still in service. Was this event (buried F-units) due to heavy train or transferring power?

1) Canton - I am standing almost at the crossing as I turn around to watch going away a red pickup darts across. the train is moving slow but the truck could have only cleared by 10 feet. 2) New Philadelphia 3)Marietta road. Was a good sized train and 2003 had problem on tuesday so maybe insurance? Bob Date: 06/23/17 04:22 Re: An F Unit Sandwich Author: santafe199 Nice stuff, Bob! That looks like a fun little chase...

and beautiful photos of the wonderful "F unit sandwich". I really like the first one -- those storm clouds are very impressive and give a great mood to the photo, as does the pretty field of flowers. Your photo in Canton is superb -- the lighting and the composition are great, with the house in the background and the train perfectly shown in a great 3/4 angle, looking beautiful. (That pick-up driver -- some people.....coulda easily "bought the farm", all just to save a few minutes. Sigh.....) And your last photo is beautiful -- what a lovely, lovely setting those trains get to run through! So pretty and serene. I just love it! Thanks so much for going out and chasing this neat train! And for posting your beautiful photos here. It is absolutely wonderful that GP20s and even F units are still working for some railroads in 2017! Long may they run! EMD rules! Edited 1 time(s).
