Western Railroad Discussion > Sunrise to Sunset on the SolsticeDate: 06/24/17 09:18 Sunrise to Sunset on the Solstice Author: kyrasmus As photographers, the summer solstice offers the most opportunity for us to practice our craft. I had to drive from Salt Lake City to Sidney, NE on June 21 and was lucky enough to catch the SAME train moments after sunrise as well as in the final moments of the day's light.
At 0640, just as the sun has cleared the roof of Echo Canyon, UT, the ZSCG1 is powering into the morning sun while passing the junction with the former Park City branch. At 2020, some 540 miles to the east, the Z train is racing away from the sunset as it approaches the outskirts of Sidney, NE. Kyle Rasmussen Centerville, UT Edited 1 time(s). On the flip side, I saw a westbound unit ethanol train in Sidney on Thursday morning, and then again at Devil's Slide (only about 10 miles west of the first shot here) on Friday morning, almost 26 hours later, for an average speed of about 20.7 mph. Still better than sitting still but for a unit train that doesn't do any switching, 20 mph is far from an impressive rate of speed! Date: 06/24/17 16:22 Re: Sunrise to Sunset on the Solstice Author: mapboy The fastest BNSF Z between the Cajon (during daylight) and La Plata, MO, webcams in the week of 5/27/17 was the Z-SBDWSP9-31, past Lugo on 5/31 at 1132, past La Plata on 6/2 at 0425, 1,735 miles in 38 hrs. (subtracted two hours for time zones) 53 min. or 2,333 minutes= 44.6 MPH. Somebody check my calculations. It passed up the Z-LACWSP9 (the UPS train!) and Z-LACNYC9! The next best was the Z-LACWSP9-01 that did 44.2 MPH. The fastest Q observed was the Q-SBDCHI6-27 that went 33.5 MPH between the two webcams.
