Western Railroad Discussion > UP Nampa Sub ~ Unit Hopper TrainDate: 07/07/17 12:40 UP Nampa Sub ~ Unit Hopper Train Author: philhoov I caught this big westbound unit hopper train led by UP #2744 yesterday.
Location was just east of the Robinson Road crossing, a couple of miles east of the Nampa, ID yard. Detector @ MP 443.1 stated something like 525 axles. Power was a massive nine engines in 2 X 5 X 2 consist, all running. I'm assuming this was a loaded potash headed to Portland for export? Phil Edited 7 time(s). Date: 07/08/17 09:14 Re: UP Nampa Sub ~ Unit Hopper Train Author: HogheadMike It's soda ash. OGRT4 is the symbol. It originates just west of Green River Wyoming at a yard called West Vaco. Cars are gathered at the various mines and built into trains which travel to the coast to be exported. From Green River to Pocatello the train runs 2x2 locomotive configuration. At Pocatello the middle 5 pack of units are added to pull the train out of Glenns Ferry Idaho and up and over the blue mountains to Hinkle. At Hinkle they are removed and the train runs 2x2 the rest of the way to Portland.

I meant to say soda ash. At least it was one of those "ashes". Phil Date: 07/08/17 16:56 Re: UP Nampa Sub ~ Unit Hopper Train Author: MC6853 Nice catch of UP 7605, the unit once in GE demo paint...
