Chasing former Coonskin territory!
Author: santafe199

During the recent SFe Convention in Tulsa, OK a few of us took a free day to investigate the local railfanning scene. I’ll make the introductions (sorta) in image #8. Our day starts out at Claremore, northeast of Tulsa:

1. EMD 1603 & 1604 on an eastbound manifest at Degrote (siding) in Claremore.

2. & 3. BNSF 7851 is eastbound with a stacker at S 4280 Rd northeast of Chelsea meeting a parked BNSF 7281 west.

4. Our EMD twin friends, 1603 & 1604 from Claremore also make an appearance here NE of Chelsea.

5. We bagged the EMD twins one more time from the US hwy 60 overpass northeast of White Oak. That good ol’ Mr Sol is starting to play peek-a-boo behind the clouds with us…

6. We made our way back toward Tulsa, stooping off to grab this eastbound intermodal at the 6th St crossing at Chelsea.

7. Another slight delay nets us BNSF 3948 on a westbound stacker at Lynn Rigg Blvd(?) crossing near Verdigris.

8. & 9. Even though the clouds have taken over Jerry provided an opportunity for us ‘out-of-staters’ to shoot a train on the huge bridge over the Verdigris River SE of Verdigris. From left to right: Jerry Palmer (our tour guide), Nick Tharalson & Keel Middleton. Keel seems to be admiring the color purple in some local roadside flora. (kinda strange for a Jayhawk fan… ;^) And complete with oppressive cloud cover, here comes BNSF 5206 with a westbound stacker. This navigable river leads into the Port of Catoosa.

10. We all took a lunch break, then got back to work on the southwest side of Tulsa. Here’s our westbound pal from Verdigris, BNSF 3948 with a fresh crew at a location called “Shirk(don’t ask, ‘cause I don’t know… ;^).

11. Also at Shirk the 3948 met eastbound BNSF 5247 on a manifest. These were the only trains we shot in the afternoon, so we head back into Tulsa for a SFe Convection gathering…

12. & 13. …inside Tulsa Union Depot. This is a very well kept & good looking structure. What a shame Amtrak’s route map never found a way to call on Tulsa! (sigh…)

One more:

14. While milling around outside several of us caught a loaded coal train for the day’s finale in downtown Tulsa. Here’s BNSF 8466 on the point.

Thanks for the company!

Shirk was named for Ben Shirk, a Frisco official.

You're welcome.
