People work hard on the railroad and there is nothing they run out of to do. So now the railroad has no heart and gets rid of people who were doing their job and to hell with their families and retirement goals. Cold man, just cold. And, what does that do the ones left at work. Scares the hell out of them wondering when they will be next.

Sounds like the SP, sales goes down you cut sales and marketing, never mind that the problem isn't in the
middle but rather at the top.

How is a link to a local paper which is republishing an AP story better than the link to the direct story on AP? Content is the exact same.

Apparently UP wants to dig themselves into the same hole that CSXT is digging itself into, except CSXT's hole is starting to look like a grave!

For some reason, I couldn't get the AP link to load so found another. Probably "better" wasn't the best word to use.

Mr. Fritz must have listened to one of EHH's speeches ! If anything goes wrong, he'll blame the workers .

And in another way to increase the bottom line, UP announced yesterday that California was "Constrained" and is increasing the 53' UMXU and EMHU rates from California to Chicago by $815 plus fuel. This is a month earlier than normal for them to take Peak Season increases and the largest ever. This goes against the market as there are plenty of empty containers for reloading in California and I have had no issues getting gate reservations in LA and Lathrop.

Definitely sucks for the people involved, although these announcements often include jobs that are presently unfilled. So that promotion doesn't happen, etc.

Companies develop a lot of dead wood. In management and on the shop floor. And sometimes don't want to thin out the ranks. So, they need a chain saw when it's time.

The UP Law Dept. is bloated.

That "plus fuel" costs is really something. I understood that when fuel was over $ 3. a gallon. But, just like government, you never get rid of the avenue to charge MORE.

No, the BNSF would not as they do not have their own fleet of 53' containers. Schneider, Hunt, and others are free to do what ever they want with pricing. I share a customer with Hunt and their rates remain the same year around for this customer out of California. On a small volume shippers, many do follow the lead of the UP.

I personally know 2 Managers who have been cut already, one top MofW retired early and his son in Finance just dumped. Hope they can keep justifying a steam program... === === = === JLH

You shouldn't be surprised by this. I refer you to Fred Frailey's Jan. 1, 2016 column in TRAINS magazine titled "The Party's Over". I reread it this morning. It's still on the 'net. Just type in his name and the title of the column.
