Buffer Cars & Photo Request
Author: northridgeswitcher

Hello to all and thanks for keeping TO full of great information and photos!

Question, the current oil train that runs from LA up the Coastline (I believe to a point north of SLO) and back a couple of time a week does this train have a "Buffer" car between the locomotives first oil car and then one other non oil car on the rear?

Any Photo of a recent run of this train would also be much appreciated.

With the just arrived Athearn Tank-Train cars in N Scale looking for information for modeling purposes but thought the Western Board would be the best place to ask the question.

Thanks to all that answer.

There have been quite a few photos posted here on TO of the California Tank Train. They don't appear to have buffer cars and its because of the heavy crude they carry. Micro Trains had a two pack of BNSF buffer cars a few months ago in N.

"The Cans", which is the oil train that runs up the coast from LA to San Ardo does not and never has used buffer cars.
The oil carried on this train is very heavy and is classified as Combustable and does not need buffer cars.

Not recent and not a great photo but I got it at Oxnard last May:

Andy, actual great photos thank you for sharing.

The photo (and story about) with the caboose on the end is great also.

Roger, I will check out the Micro-Trains cars also.

Thanks again,
