Fall is here in the Last Frontier - Part 4
Author: DRGW3002

In the continuing series of images from the last days of the ARR's 2017 summer passenger season we have three more shots from Friday September 15, 2017.

1. - The southbound Denali Star rolls across Cantwell Creek in the small village of Cantwell, Alaska.

2. - The northbound Denali Star accelerates away from Broad Pass having just met it's counterpart from image #1.

3. - A short while later the same train is seen about to pass under the George Parks Hwy at Summit, Alaska with Summit Lake visible beyond. The train has just crossed the highest point on the Alaska Railroad at 2363 ft that also marks the northern continental divide between the Pacific and Arctic Ocean drainage.

Thanks for looking,

Back in 1867 everyone in the country was calling US Secretary of State William Seward an absolute idiot for spending 7+ million dollars in the Alaska purchase. They ALL called it "Seward's Folly". Although that original $7 mil has been recouped a gazillion times over, we can totally ignore the basic mineral rights & strategic world location bonanzas the US has accrued with ownership of Alaska. Just seeing the breath taking scenery in your magnificent photos tells us the purchase was well worth it! I will be greatly disappointed if none of these 3 images doesn't garner you another IOTD right on the heels of your previous one...

the $7 million was for purchasing ONLY the land that was occupied by the Russians, mostly coastal communities.
It was not until 1971 from Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) that the remaining land was paid for by the US Government.
