Author: cozephyr

WAMX 3936, GP39-2, Kansas & Oklahoma (KO reporting marks) ex-Delaware & Hudson 7603 built by EMD as GP39-2 March 1976. Unit wind blade train (locomotives on both ends, 1x1) was parked east of Pawnee Rock, Kansas, on rainy September 25, 2017. Ex-ATSF line (K&O Great Bend Subdivision) to Jetmore, KS, (Jetmore end removed).

Watco Supply Chain Services, one of the facility’s partners, announced that General Electric will be delivering wind turbine components to store at the facility (rail transload with new wye was noted west of Pawnee Rock, KS).

“We reached out to our supply chains services group within Watco companies and they felt that they could absolutely handle it, and then it’s been a pretty quick moving process since then,” said Casey Harbour, K&O Railroad marketing manager.

The wind blades were being transported by both rail and truck. Plenty of truck activity noted September 25, 2017 on Highway 56 - wind blade deliveries.

"New transload facility has opened in Great Bend (Kansas).

A ceremony on Thursday (June 15, 2017) officially opened the project, which allows trains to drop off their cargo for trucks and vice versa.

The Kansas Department of Transportation led the effort to establish two transload facilities. The state received 111 site applications and the facilities were eventually awarded to Great Bend and Garden City, which has already opened its facility.

The state contributed $3 million to the $8 million project, with another $360,000 in federal funds and funding from private industry." (June 2017)

Hey CZ,
There was 5 windmill blade truck loads on Old 140 Hwy that comes into Ellsworth from the East and ges down 156 to Great Bend and Pawnee Rock and also to Garden City. I also met 2 loads of tower sections on my way to Salina that morning. So yes, there is a huge amount of Hwy traffic with the wind towers. Around 5-6 loads aday go thru here. upkpfan
