When a GP9 is not a GP9

Herzog 180 is a GP9 under the shell, but no longer needs an engineer to operate it.

So who or what actually operates this unit.

The Herzog "machine operator".

The Herzog unit that was hanging around my town last year was similar, but appeared EMD switcher-based, rather than Geep.
In any event, pretty ugly!

What does the control stand look like?

There is no control stand. The machine is remote control.

That's a lot of very expensive glass on a cab with no control stand.
And no Remote Control markings too.
I'm not convinced.

Well, I've piloted one many times. It's remote control. It probably doesn't carry "Remote Control" markings because it's not a locomotive.

Is this Relco rebuild?

So I assume one can either sit in the cab while holding the remote control box, and/or be anywhere else on the train or on the ground while holding the remote control box?

If they are not rebuilding anything, except the controls, on the inside, why do they rebuild the outside?

This power pulls a train of gondola like cars with a backhoe machine that runs across the top of the cars and the operator controls the whole thing as he cleans out ditches, unloads ties, or picks up the old ones, or the railroad iron. It usually has a engine like the 180 on each end. Look up Herzog MTM and check out the videp. I think that is the site. upkpfan

We had a different Herzog train here in western North Carolina on NS going westbound on the "S" Line from Salisbury to past Asheville. The one we had was basically a heavily modified GP40 with well car used to carry the old ties and rail and whatever.
Mike

1 - Herzog 202 a heavily modified GP40(I think. Tied down in Asheville a couple of days after the next shot.

2 - Back end with another cab and deck for the crane plus 6 well cars for scrap whatever. Leaving Old Fort westbound.

Correct. When the operator is in the cab on either end, inside the excavator, or on the ground.

Do the words "rear end of train movement only" painted on the nose refer to when this train is connected to another train for movement?
