Well, scratch at least one Dash 9 and a 70M. Hope the crew fairs well, apparently having to be cut out of the cab...

A heads up crew would have done the same without any PTC just like many others have.

Well here's the problem, no engineer. "Two conductors were cut out of the second train and appear to be in good condition."

It appears to have been a Restricted Speed collision, in which case...no.

That's a heck of a pileup for restricted speed...

Impact seems to have been pretty strong for a train running at ~15 mph.

How the eff do you know what happened here and whether PTC would have prevented this? Do you work for the NTSB now?

I'm getting the impression that this wasn't a rear-ender.

The accident begs for some drone video footage. Only good way to show such a railroad accident is with pictures/video from above.

My guess: manifest derailed in front of the stack train

...depending upon the tonnage and where in the train. My assessment of Restricted Speed came from the description of rear ender and yard track. I see someone observed based on the picture that it may have been collision with an adjacent track derailment (which PTC would not have prevented), but the news report stated no crew on the train that was struck. I wasn't speculating on the cause but rather making an observation on the potential of PTC to prevent it.

Toyah Sub has PTC active. So doubting this was a simple rear end collision. Where the pile up occurred is just a few hundred feet west of the CP at Monahans West (T608). Looks like the Z was on the main, and the manifest was on the Texas-New Mexico RR lead. They're saying the manifest had no crew which makes sense as they usually park trains there for switching into the TNMRR yard. It looks like the Z was an eastbound on the main looking at a clear at T608 (West Monahans). There's another CP (T609 Thortonville) just under a mile west of the spot. There's a switch to a setout track right at that collision point. So maybe the manifest split the switch and had a car leaning out, and the Z hit it? Train was tied down and they couldn't see the car slightly sticking out?

IF the manifest was fouling the main, shouldn't the main have a red signal since a car would have been beyond the siding circuitĀ and into the switch circuit?

PTC would prevent an overspeed condition in your commented situation.

Not if it was a Restricted Speed collision. PTC doesn't know anything about range of vision, just about not exceeding 20 mph.

Lotsa pics:

What a mess.
Edit: Our daughter in law lives in Maonhans. She said she didn't hear the crash.
Her daughter goes to school across the tracks but only got delayed going a long way around.

Wow, that is not a collision of two trains with a combined speed of under 20 MPH.
