Saw this on Craigslist. Just throwing it out there. Not Mine.
Semaphore and complete Railroad Crossing Signal Setup with cats eyes.

Wow! 1800's pieces they say. Bet the signal guys in those days would have blew a hemorrhoid getting the semaphore placed and their crane might have struggled also. How about moving the date into the early 1900's, say even the early 1920's. Hope this guy gets his $6M for both from some unaware individual.

The listing is for $6000 for one and $6500 for the pair. Not $6 million.

Well those aren't 1800's signals. Some patent dates may say 1898, but Western Cullen Hayes crossing heads are aluminum, not cast iron. That semaphore would look great up at Fubar Flats, though the middle lens would have to be changed to red to be correct. The crossbuck could find a home on my driveway.

Sorry, not that big a deal we have masts just like that and use a front end loader to move and place them. Don't have a crane on site anymore either helped set up a complete one just like that was a case front end loader and backhoe that did it then.

Working? Show us inside the signal case.

But, you see, in railroading 'M' means thousand. 'MM' means million. Usually used as in "6M Trailing Tons". Of course, now that 'K' (actually 1,024) has entered popular usage as the common abbreviation for thousand (thanks to the computer scientists), the industry might have to re-think this matter. Then of course there's the question of whether those tons were "long" or "short" - steel rails were sold by the long (2,240#) ton, whereas cars were loaded in short (2,000#) tons.

I'll try again here. I meant in the 1800's (if these US&S semaphores as shown were even available), without a crane, it would have been a struggle to erect one with only several men and their muscle power. I don't believe there were front loaders and backhoes even thought of in the 1800's or even the early 1900's. No hydraulics then, only maybe air cylinders like on the Jordan speakers, but can't you imagine how large they would be on some type of tractor type vehicle even if there was such in the early 1900's.
