Hello Old Friend, Good To See You Again.......
Author: Fiftyfooter

The Lumber yard in Goleta, has been receiving loads for over 40 years plus! Today it is run by Hayward Lumber Co.
They usually get a spine car or two once a week on Mondays. They are the only customer left between Ventura and Gaudalupe on the Old SP
Coastline. This week this 40 year old SP Box, showed up with 2 spine cars as well.(all loaded)

I like the layout of this lumber yard, and I think it looks like something you would model in HO!

Great to see an SP box back here on home rails like the old days!

I would be tempted -- Not that I ever would, of course, or even suggest someone else do it! -- to get a couple of cans of brown paint and a roller and touch-up the unsightly sides of that boxcar.

Is the car behind the box a spine car, or is it a bulkhead flat?

Spine car there were two of them! Here is a shot of the 3 going south yesterday above Goleta!

Thanks for the picture!  It's hard to see from the freeway what's back there.  I didn't realize they had this much business- I can't see any cars when I drive by.

And of course YOU would be the one busted by the cops for vandalism if you tried that.
Because we all know the "real" taggers never get caught.

Amazingly, there are a lot of these SP double door box cars with loads of lumber in New Jersey these days. See them on the old CNJ southern div local for woodhaven lumber, all the time...

Fifty footer, the car you are referring to as a spine car is actually a center beam flat car. Here is a photo of a spine car, which was used to carry trailers.

You are right for sure! I throw the term "Spine Car" around loosely sometimes for empty centerbeams because of their bony look.
Also, they are super sketchy, always seem to be the ones string lining the curves!
