Need suggestions for railfanning Minnesota iron ore country
Author: march_hare

This September, it looks like I'll be driving down along the Lake Superior shoreline from the Canadian border down towards Duluth.

I haven't been in that area in 15 years or more. Can anybody offer some tips on finding iron ore traffic, either on CN, BNSF, or the mining company carriers?

Come to think of it, do the former Erie Mining and Reserve RR operations even operate any more?

Reserve Mining is now Cyprus North Shore and their operations are worth the trip. Erie Mining is kaput. This shot, from last September, is near Silver Bay, MN.

This is what you will find on the DM&IR...this was last September. Understand there is a substantial GE invasion taking place there, and as they get straight-air installed, you'll see more narrow-nose GE's in CN paint.

Cyprus Mining is long gone. The former Reserve Mining is now NorthShore Mining, a subsidiary of Cleveland - Cliffs.

Best resource online for current operations in this area is the OreRail group on io.groups: https://groups.io/g/OreRail
This group moved from Yahoo Groups a few months ago.
