UP Fort Collins Local in today's storm light
Author: highgreengraphics

Today's UP LaSalle-Fort Collins Local north of Fort Collins, CO on the Boettcher Branch delivering cement covered hoppers to the Holcim Cement Plant loadout, in some weird light under mean clouds that according to the NWS spawned a tornado northeast of here. It's not hard to imagine the stark silo towers on top of the hill as a medieval castle with foreboding skies boiling over it. === === = === JLH

Fantastic light, almost eerie scene. Great job, James.

That lighting is pretty wild, extra points for hanging around during the storm.

Congrats on IOTD!
Like the lighting and composition, can really see the details on the lead units perfectly.
About what O'clock position was the sun in your photo?

Also reminds one of The Wizard of Oz!

One of the best IOTDs I've ever seen! Your image has that immediate, attention-grabbing appeal. Like a cross between Norman Rockwell & Howard Fogg. Very nicely done!

The leaning wire fence is what makes the picture for me. The rest is great, but that fence in the grass gives it an ageless look.

Thanks, everyone. It was about 1:00 PM, the sun would have been a bit wrong if it was not bouncing off other clouds. To the right is where all the real nasty action was in the clouds, but could not frame that in the view. Right here the train has stopped for about 4 minutes to line the switch behind the train, giving me time to scurry around the low piles of dirt fill to try to compose the clouds into the view. It only barely sprinkled here though it sure smelled strongly of rain and was raining mightily only a short distance away. === === = === JLH

Congrats Jim on one of the finest IOTD's. You captured the violent weather that inundated the area yesterday. Lots of T-storms with hail and tornadoes all around.

Love your shot, the College World Series game yesterday afternoon was postponed due to weather, but
several years ago there was a game postponed with exactly the cloud formation you shot off to the West.
End up pretty scary for those in attendance not used to Midwest weather.

Just awesome JLH, I almost expected to see Miss Gulch (Wizard of Oz) on her bicycle in the sky.

I know it's cliche, but I think if you submit this for the UP calendar it would be a sure bet. I would think it's perfect for the cover.
