KCS orders 50 new units -all GE
Author: nygiant

Will Progress Rail, CAT, EMD ever get another order? CN and KCS have a total of 250 units coming. Will they exit the new diesel market and concentrate on rebuilds?

Tier 4 units, but no specifics.

I'd love to see a few sets of LNG equipment in the mix. Like the FEC, KCS has some nice long runs, end to end.

If Cat (EMD) doesn't have there shit together by now building new locomotives, they NEED to go out of business!

Has EMD / PR/ Cat finished the order of SD70 T4's for UP, and did BNSF ever order any?

It's just "Progress Rail".

The Union Pacific order has about 20 locomotives to completion. BNSF has 10 locomotives on order for 4th Quarter 2018 delivery.

Railroads won't let that happen. They don't want to be captive to a single-source supplier. That's why railroads bought EMDs by the boatloads and just enough GEs to keep GE in business. Tables have turned.

Maybe "Not a Whole Lot of Progress Rail" would be more accurate.

Thank you for the info.

Has there been much information out there on how the new EMD Tier 4 units are performing? I've only read bits and pieces of some (what sounded like any ways) teething problems or "one off" failures, but I haven't heard anything on how these units do over all. One expects there to be teething issues for an all out new locomotive, and I still hear occasional problems with GE's Tier 4 engines out on the road too, but since UP is still running their new EMD's, I'm assuming they must not be having major issues with them???

I had another one the other day. The thing was awesome. We lost a couple of units uphill on a heavy bulk train.

It loaded way up and kept us going until the other unit reduced load, and the T4 loaded way up and kept gripping the rail until about 2mph.

It just kept chugging away, and is Erie quiet inside and out.

It loaded up over (what we thought) was its rated limit for awhile.

We were both impressed.

None of us had any issues with these in our consist since they have been out here.

Just a quick THANK you for that run down. We don't see enough posts like this!

Great report.

Way over the rated max is impressive.

He said 'loaded way up' and thought it was 'over the rated max'..... so not 'way over the rated max'.

Only a GE can be Erie quiet... ;-)

Thanks for the first hand info. Would be nice to see more being ordered by other railroads.

The "Loaded way up" part plus the "over the max" part
engaged me.

Still a good report.

Pretty sure we saw it spike to 223 or 233klbs of effort a few times.

The bar graph meter only goes to 200.
