"No Humping"
Author: Fiftyfooter

Don't blame me for the title, it says it on the car. Any idea why?

CAMY 1017 belongs to the Camp Chase Railway
Reporting mark CAMY

The Camp Chase Railway (reporting mark CAMY) is a short-line switching and terminal railroad in and near Columbus, Ohio, United States, running past the former Camp Chase. Currently owned by Indiana Boxcar Corporation as of 2015. It was previously known as Camp Chase Railroad and was owned by Carload Express, Inc. when it acquired a former New York Central Railroad line between Columbus and Lilly Chapel from Conrail in 1994. Through trackage rights, the CCRA interchanges with the Norfolk Southern Railway at Buckeye Yard.

CCRA owns three EMD GP9 engines, numbers 7042, 7076, and 7225, which are painted orange and black, with white "Camp Chase" lettering, and an older orange and white engine, number 752 with orange "Camp Chase Railway" letterin

Means car should not be shoved over a hump in a classification yard. Since such yards are an endangered species, I guess younger fans aren't as aware of such things or stenciled cars such as this one. Back in the day when cars had a wooden panel to post various signs, a Do Not Hump paper sign could be stapled to it. This denoted a fragile load that shouldn't undergo the humping process where a car could experience a hard coupling on the bowl tracks.

Camp Chase originally had an SW1500/MP15 (can't remember which model it was)

It means the load may suffer impact damage upon coming to a joint after the run after being cut loose at the top of the hump. This assumes the yard crew will pay attention to the message painted on the side of the car. Compliance involves an extra switch move or two so it may not happen.

It may have been used to transport a delicate cargo like explosives... or chandeliers.

Alternatively it's graffiti written by a monk...

Back in the mid 70s, one of my college roommates (a guy who would be charitably called an "incel" in current terminology) had a cardboard "Do Not Hump" sign that he would drape over his roommates doorknobs when our girlfriends came over.

Most of us thought it was equal parts humorous and pathetic. But we all noted that it was quite ineffective.

Necktie for bedroom door was the sign in my day but no co-ed dorms back then. We had apartments.

Maybe on CSX and CP (common thread here being EH Harrison's dislike for them), but not really on other railroads. In fact, UP is building a new one in Texas soon and NS has at least opened one back up that they recently closed (realizing their mistake...).

I always wanted a “DO NOT HUMP” plackard for the back window of my Ford Ranger but never saw an opportunity to liberate one.

I saw some reproduction ones somewhere once. Can’t remember where.

I think that even the Corona beer cars get humped. Only special loads like hi-wides and certain gasses get shoved over to rest. Of course, kicking in a flat yard can be way rougher than humping.
