Any leakage bad but article quotes sheriff as saying 20-30 cars derailed. It doesn't look like that many. Crew did a great job in stopping train with minimal cars derailed.

What's a few Iowa farm families losing their profits - AND their FARMS - for a few years it takes for BNSF to pay their debts for cleanup, delay the remediation of the ruined land, etc., while the Canadian oil company that processed this diluted bitumen goop continues to make profits from their greed ?

When there are days of torrential rain, is the railroad able to do inspections that can determine the stability of the roadbed?

No injuries to the crew or civilians is a good thing.

There could have been a fire and MANY more cars involved.

Do we even know the origin of the oil? It could be from Canada or from the Bakken region in North Dakota.

Yuck, what a mess. It just HAD to involve water. Well that will be hell to pay.

Given the toxic nature of the chemicals used to make the bitumen flow, so secret that the oil industry will not reveal what they are - does it REALLY make a whit of difference whose poison spring this crap came from Kevin ?

It does when it comes time to determine who pays for the damages.

That is an interesting point. Would the product producer have any liability here? I would think the railroad would be the one with the liability.

If this were a pipeline break, I don’t think anyone would ask where the oil came from.

GREAT question! This type of derailment (in area's were flooding has occured or is ongoing) has happened too often in the industry. BNSF will be asked why this type of train (crude oil) was allowed to proceed, especially if there were flash flood warnings issued.
