Something I just figured out about UP locomotive paint
Author: bmarti7

I have been on T.O. for a few years but my brain synced with reality just today. I notice that the new U.P. locomotives have the gray short hood. daaaa.......When did UP drop the green? Thanks.

UtahRails.net indicates that the standard was changed to gray mid-1984.

Yup. And you can tell GE wide-nose engines that have been repainted by UP from those that are still in factory paint by how much gray is on top of the nose; the factory painted locos have nose tops that are all or mostly yellow. Compare the lead two locomotives of photo 7 in this thread:

This may not apply to the newest orders of GEs (the T4s), of which the nose tops appear to be gray, although it appears to be a somewhat lighter gray than UP repaints get.

Maybe the UP didn’t want to pay GE for “optional painting “
