I hate to mention this but we have been told that if the SP bay window caboose owned by the Mojave Chamber of Commerce, now in storage, is to be accessible by the public, it must meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. In its previous location we had a ramp, which we planned to re-build when we move it. We used it as an office and visitor center and planned to do that again.
But now we are told that at least one door must be wide enough for a wheelchair.
Before anyone blows their lid, as an 82-year-old with a bad back and knee, I don't have a problem with this. But it is a reality. We can use it for a private office for our members without the door change, and could also put the door on the end where it would not be as as noticeable which would be fine because that end was damaged in service which is how we got it from the Purdy Company in the first place.
Something to think about.. One last note, I personally would be leery of putting anything of great value in an all-wood caboose exposed to the public in this day and age.
Sorry, reality sometimes sucks!

I am sure that if they wanted to move it the ADA regs would come into play. As to security, the Cannery Row rec trail where it is located is very public and well-policed.

Hope they can work it out. Forgot to look for it the other month, but we only did a quick drive by of Cannery Row instead of walking around. It's a good spot for some railroad history, but I get the conundrum.

Failure to do his due diligence.

I’m sure that the bike riders would be happy to see it go, having to make a slight turn around it rather then speeding along in a straight line is a pain. Also, they don’t like anything to do with trains near “their” bike paths.

We have ridden that rec trail many times on our bicycles and I assure you this is not at all an issue.

Had a phone call this morning from Ed Ciliberti who bought the caboose and saw my posting here and on AP— very nice guy, just wanted to thank me for posting it. He has to wend his way thru the bureaucracy but he has some high powered local backing that shoukd make it go well fir him— told him I would post any updates he cared  to share as he us not a TO. or AP railfan.
