Western Railroad Discussion > Another John Deer trespasser!Date: 08/08/18 21:33 Another John Deer trespasser! Author: santafe199 So there I was. I just found the train about a quarter mile away with all headlights burning, just starting to move. I parked, grabbed the tele-boomer and started to move into position for a head-on shot. A sure fire sign of departure should have been 2 toots on the horn. Instead, I heard a rapid fire almost staccato of sound from the lead unit’s horn. Oh hey… maybe the engineer knows me and is being friendly? Nahhh, can’t be. He’s looking into the sun at a figure ¼ mile away. So I raise the boomer and take a look.
There he is! That notorious trespasser John Deer, who just loves walking on RR right-of-way. The engineer is trying to scare this idiot off the track. But he’s not smart enough to be scared. It took a while, but Mr Deer finally ambled of the track like he owned the joint. I don’t know how many times this John Deer dude got cloned, but it has to be a bunch! Probably some Fish & Game scientific experiment that went horribly bad. Even over state lines. I personally ran down at least a dozen John Deer characters during my 19 years up in the Big Sky. And you also gotta watch out for this John Deer while out driving. Especially on the less frequently travelled secondary highways. If you hit one, you’re on your own. That’s because these John Deer types don’t ever carry insurance. What idiots… 1. UP 4633 + intermodal train is attempting to depart out of the siding west of White City, KS. But there seems to be a conflict with “John Deer” (or is that a Jane Deer??) stubbornly holding ground. Near-trespasser accident date: August 8, 2018. Thanks for honking! Lance Garrels santafe199 Date: 08/08/18 22:05 Re: Another John Deer trespasser! Author: misty1 Hey Lance things haven't changed muchin the way of John Deer's up here. I have driven over a million miles and been in high speed chases thru game preserves and never hit one till I got to big sky. First one just walked into the side of the P/U after I went to the other lane. By the way a Great pic , need to frame that one for the wallhanger.

But it's just another Jane Doe... Date: 08/08/18 22:22 Re: Another John Deer trespasser! Author: MojaveBill That pic could be used in a clever Operation Lifesaver ad...

Larry Date: 08/08/18 23:08 Re: Another John Deer trespasser! Author: bradleymckay Looks like a doe. In my area I see more doe's in pairs than as single's. Oddly cars and trains don't see to bother them much, especially in migratory paths and when searching for food. But if they sense a non human predator they will flee, often right into roads and highways. Some have even jumped through large windows of homes fleeing mountian lions.
Allen Date: 08/09/18 04:30 Re: Another John Deer trespasser! Author: ns1000 Cool pic!!
I had to stop for a couple of these on my recent railfan trip. Both just walked out on the road that I was on.... Date: 08/09/18 05:39 Re: Another John Deer trespasser! Author: billio Would he/she/John(?) qualify as a deer int he headlights? Kinda looks that way...
Date: 08/09/18 06:16 Re: Another John Deer trespasser! Author: LocoPilot750 Over a million miles at least on the highway over the years, and I've never hit one yet, just lucky I guess. Had a few close calls though during rut here in Kansas. On the trains It seemed like we'd hit several each year.
Date: 08/09/18 07:02 Re: Another John Deer trespasser! Author: Copy19 I was riding a Union Pacific coal train eastbound near Fremont, Neb when we saw a deer standing in the gauge. It took a lot of horn blasting and playing with the headlight before it casually stepped clear.

(chuckling) Yeah, I'm sure it is. And that's why I put that disclaimer in the caption. But darn it, being a female just didn't fit into the way I wanted to spin this little event. So I took a liberty... (Boy, ya jes can't get away with nuthin' 'round this joint... ;^) An added note. As I was shooting this Jane Doe sequence I was thinking of the great cautionary tale my friend John (no relation to the Does) just posted on RRer's Nostalgia: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?18,4608730 His tale is tragic and funny all at the same time, and really is a 'word to all wise' for all male Don Juan wannabes. Check it out! Lance Date: 08/09/18 11:07 Re: Another John Deer trespasser! Author: texchief1 Nice shot, Lance!
