Its not something you see every day! Rare is up to you. I think its cool to see this first "Modern Cab" Dash-8 in consist with the new Tier 4.

Personally, and this is only my opinion, I wish they would completely do away with the flag and go back to the block UNION PACIFIC on the long hood.

I agree.  I think the flag motif is a it old and tired.

The last few weeks I see 9432, 9512, 9632, and 9774. Have seen the 9432 3 times.

But you're not supposed to use it as advertising.

As I recall, the flag came about during the Post 9/11 wave of nationalism, and many American companies prominently displayed the flag in the 2002-2005 era. However I agree, perhaps it’s time to move on to branding that is more neutral when dirty or damaged...

As a side note, I was talking to a seasonal retail clerk in a store, whose other side job was railroad related while he was a senior in high school. After doing some mental math, I realized he wasn’t even alive in 2001. It’s hard to fathom that he didn’t know the “pre 9/11” world of “trust” that I got to enjoy. After that, I just felt old...

BN SD 60M's were delivered with an American Flag on the cab side in the mid 90's.    Displaying the flag on a locomotive isn't advertising, it's a proud display of our heritage.  I think the UP scheme is classy when it is kept clean.

Agree with this.  The flag is part of UP's marketing image, "Building America."
Personally, the worst use of the flag is on the baggage car, but I've ranted about that before.

I agree 100%.  I too hate to see the decals when they get dirty or old, BUT, I would hate to see the flag go away.  I wish more companies went to this much trouble to show a little patriotism.  I always thought that the small BN flags was a nice touch and was sorry to see those go away.

Everybody loves to call it "patriotism". OK, if UP is being so "patriotic" then why do they allow the flags to be defaced: burned, peeled, soot covered. Where is the "patriotism" in that? It was simply UP jumping on the "America first" bandwagon; if they were serious about the patriotism part then those flags should be cleaned and repaired after every trip. C'mon, UP, show us your true patriotism!!! I guess "patriotism" ends at the checkbook when it costs money to maintain the flags.

And on another note, why does UP want to hide who they are? You've got this huge locomotive and unless you look closely at the small shield most people (other than railfans) would probably not know what railroad it is. Why not be proud of your railroad and spell it out?

To answer your question, it's fairly rare, given that UP got rid of most of their Dash 8's. I want to say they have about 30ish left?
