How many remaining ATSF painted SD40-2's ?
Author: CCMF

I like to follow secondary roads that parallel tracks way more than I like Interstates. Sometimes it pays off with a headlight or a passing train requiring a quick U-turn or maybe a chase. In this case we were a short distance behind a southbound stack train but kept stopping for this and that and never seemed to catch up, just nipping on his heels for miles. But then I struck paydirt when I spotted a train led by a very rare SD40-2 still in Santa Fe paint, albeit looking pretty beat. Long past it's prime, this old dog drags it's northbound train out of the siding at Hackney, Kansas after having dodged the southbound stacker.

What begs a question is how many of 187 originals in ATSF blue & yellow remain ?

Were there ever any painted in the Warbonnet paint scheme?

None ever wore red and silver.

That was reserved for the "Super Fleet" and SD40-2's weren't part of the Super Fleet.

The few up here in the PNW appear to have been through the shops recently and repainted.

I have been trying to track them. Here is the list of 40 units I've compiled that are still in blue and yellow.
Most likely there are some relatively recent repaints on this list, but it is a good starting point. Anyone with updates to the list feel free to chime in.

BNSF 1603,1604,1607,1608,1609,1611,1614,1617,1618,1621,1622,1627,1629,1636,1638,1640,1645,1647,1648,
1721,1723,1738,1739,1741,1746,1747,1751,1755,1757,1758,1760,1761,1765,1767,1770,1772,1773,1885,1886,1923

Stared at 1871 yesterday in Swoosh paint working Pasco East and the Hump.
EDIT: 1874 was also in Swoosh back in May this year, also in Pasco

Though this photo was taken in January 2015, BNSF 1755 is still in Santa Fe livery at this time.  Taken at the west end of the yard in Belen, NM.

1755 is still sporting a clean SF paint job. Great engine. Amtrak #3 once "borrowed" it from us, and I didn't have switch engine for the night. Doesn't help when #4 also took the other SD40-2 on the same day.

Good to know that even the PTC brow can't ruin the classic looks of a 40-2 in yellowbonnet. Awesome shots!

Thanks. Confirmed it and a few more new repaints. I have updated my list on the earlier post above.

Pretty neat we have so many of these guys still running around considering the UP has 4 SD40-2’s left period.

UP still has hundreds of SD40-2's.   They may call them SD40N's now but whatever.
