Forced Friday 'Fanning
Author: mg8711

I was sort of forced into railfaning yesterday evening...I don't normally go out shooting after work but nonetheless for the second Friday in a row I headed out, camera in tow. Unlike last week, I stayed closer to home, shooting the GSR around McFarland and Paxico, KS.

1) First train of the evening was this grain empty bound for Frankfort, KS with UP 4978 leading, and the New York Central heritage unit, NS 1066 in trail between McFarland and Alma.
2) 17 minutes later train KLADU was in my viewfinder with UP 8156, NS 9844, and one of the last CNW units, UP 9805 on the pull at Kuenzli Creek Road near the west end of the siding at Paxico.
3) Like clock work, another 16 minutes and the next train, UP 5955 leading ONE/Evergreen stacks east with...

4) UP 7273 as DPU at Snokomo Road east of Paxico
5) The clockwork trio was it until about an hour later. I heard a horn, thinking it was to the west, but a headlight came into view to the east as UP 7967 came into view with a quite rare for this line westbound loaded coal train.
6) Thinking I was done for the day, I wanted to try some sort of low angle view for the DPU, UP 6537. This coal load was detouring due to flooding in Southeast Kansas on the Parsons Sub. I hopped on I70 after this, ready to head home...

7) ...but an eastbound was sitting on the main at Paxico with one of the most bright red sunsets I've ever seen to the west. To boot, UP 2483, an SD60M was the leader on this eastbound manifest, the MWTKC if I were to guess. The day ended and I went home.

That's one of the best parts about going to the open plains. The big open skies and dramatic weather. Nice shots!

Great Series! Those clouds add dimension and depth to your shots. As for the last shot, all I can say is Holy Crap is that Awesome! Looks like that train is coming straight out of a forge!

That's NOT scripture. Scripture has nothing to do with this shot. That was a private text exchange between the photographer and me right after he got the shot. He knew he had something special, and let me know about it. I teasingly asked him when he was going to post his earthquake shot, etc. And I'm quite sure he took my line above as a congratulatory phrase...

What sort of camera that you are using it? One photo shows lovely sunset with red clouds is beauty! It is so much appreciated and thanks for sharing.

I shoot with a basic DSLR, a Nikon D3300. It’s since been outdated by the D3400. I edit using Adobe Lightroom.
