Who needs a train? (vol #2)
Author: santafe199

Last Saturday I met up with friend & fellow retired engineer Jim Will (KCRW287 on TO). I’ve been wanting him to show me how to get into the backwoods area on the old Mop mainline between Leavenworth & Atchison, KS. Having grown up in Leavenworth, Jim knows the area very well. He also ran over this line as an engineer, after his original employer C&NW merged with Uncle Pete in 1995. Jim showed me some pretty remote spots, and the UP actually sent us a couple of trains! Later on that afternoon we moseyed across the Missouri River to explore BNSF’s St Joseph Sub. We bagged 2 more trains, and a knockout of a sunset:

1. BNSF scene looking WSW near Farley, MO on the St Joe Sub. It’s 6:49 PM on October 13, 2018.

Thanks for the tour!

That's a great photo Lance. It rings of Midwestern Grange farm country.

Lance wins again! This is the best I could do last night sans crossbuck.

We are usually landscape photographers who happen to inclue a train in the image.   Each click needs to tell a story. Well Done !

Reminds me of the old mariner's "Red skies at night, sailor's delight."  Beautiful stuff!

Just curious....what kind of camera did you use??

I find when taking these kind of pics, it works best to tweak the camera settings.

NICE shot Lance!!

Canon Rebel T6 set on programed landscape. Still experimenting with manual settings with little success.

No Kickapoo, but we bagged a train shortly after finding Oak Mills. Also found Port Williams.
Say, pardner: FIX (check?) your phone! I've been trying to call you for 3 days...

It's great when the elements come together to create a great sunset or sunrise.  Then you came along and captured it in a wonderful way.  You're right, you don't always need a train to make an interesting photo with a railroad theme.  There is a Facebook group, "Waiting for a train" that has pictures taken along the tracks but not train in sight.
