Update on diesel maintenance at OERM (SCRM) this past weekend!
Author: TomPlatten

This past weekend and next Veteran's Day weekend is devoted to Thomas the Tank Engine. While that is going on at the visitor's area at the front of the museum the maintenance minions were at work at the back of the plant.
1) Santa Fe #108 handled the main Thomas train Saturday and Sunday. In preparation for that John and Richard rigged the locomotive for self loading to clean out the power assemblies. This involved loading the engine at run 8 and channeling the power through the dynamic brakes resistor bank for a period of time. Naturally, this caused the locomotive to "scream" and generates much heat which is dissipated through the roof fans! SF #108 performed well during the first Thomas weekend
2) The Percy train  was handled by SP #1774, our 1953 ALCO S-4. Andy and Chris repaired the radio and the bell. before service.
Thanks guys!
3)  Frank and Carl prepared two more power assemblies to be reinstalled on the SP 1006.
4) After literally years of inactivity, OERM #1975 (ex DOT 015) roared to life Saturday. The turbo charger intake filters were rebuilt, brake hoses to the trucks replaced, generator brushes were inspected and replaced as necessary, cooling system flushed, some light bulbs replaced, and finally a new set of batteries was installed. Dave cranked the locomotive over and it started right up! It was moved back forth some and ran for a couple of hours, Next, 1975 will be moved into the carbarn to it can be jacked up off it's trucks to inspect the center plates to find out what is causing it to occasionally derail on the carbarn 7 lead. Once that problem is solved the locomotive can be used again by operations. Thanks to Dave, Frank, Carl, and Doug for installing the batteries!

Since it appears that the power assembly in the photo is pretty clean, and free of carbon, I bet it has already been rebuilt and is actually being re-installed.

Thanks for the update Tom! A couple of corrections the S-4 is SP 1474 and ex- DOT 15 is now OERM 1975 (I ran it to Hemet maybe the last time we ran there 20+ years ago).
