Is this the fire that they are saying now is consuming 80 acres per minute?

My prayers go out to anyone in the way of THAT kind of fire....

Yeah, 60 mph winds will do that.

Simi Valley to the sea....happens every 20-30 years, but yet the continued to build homes in the canyons. Way to go people.

And yes I have lived in a fire area.

As with the synagogue shooting last week, my prayers are with the families of Wednesday evening shooting in Thousand Oaks. I also pray for those families who lost a love one in the TO shooting, not to also loose their house in the current fire.

Very sad.

One of the victims from Thursday night was a survivor of the Las Vegas shootings.
That family just can't catch a break.

What is sad is that people decide to buy or build in known high fire danger areas.

CALFIRE has excellent resources such as Fire Hazard Safety Zone maps that clearly show areas that have been identified as having a Very High Fire Hazard Safety Zones. For example, if you look at the map for Calabasas 80% of the city is in a VHFHSZ. WHY would you want to live there?

Entire Los Angeles County. Pink is state responsibility red is local/county responsibility.

That fire is raging near Chico and wiped out 80% of Paradise CA.  Horrific fire, worst in state history.

No amount of preventative measures will help you when you have 60+ mph winds, dry brush and single digit humidity readings.

To clear things, the post was not about the Chico Fire, but the Camarillo Fire in Sou Calif.

But the Chico fire is headed to wipe out Chico.  The state of Oregon is sending 90 fire engines to the Chico - Paradise area.

They speak of the new normal.  Not really this is normal for California. In the past 60 years we have had many large fires this time of the year. Malibu I have seen burn at the lest 20 times in the past 60 years.  This fire line seem to be the longest of all the fires in the past 60 years 30 miles plus long. But its wind driven. Last year they had the potential for the Thomas fire to burn this area but the wind was blowing to the north west more. One year later the Santa Monica Mountains Burn once again.

Read about it in Nathan Cools new book Surf Flood Fire and Mud.

EXACTLY MY POINT, hence DON'T BUILD OR LIVE THERE.

Industrial lofts burn too under the right conditions.

YEP, 1,000% true. That is why you don't see commercial businesses building in fire prone areas like you do people building houses.

So what is your point?

The advice to not build or live in the area could also be applied to areas subject to hurricanes, tornados, annual flooding, et al.  Kind of rules out most of the U.S. Having worked as a firefighter in SoCal for 25 years before moving to Oregon I can relate to the present problem. Largest fire in my career was in 1970 and went 185,000 acres in three days.

My point is that you do not need to be in a fire prone area to get burned out. One structure fire and high winds and it's off to the races. Whole neighbors have been lost in the suburbs with not a hill in sight. THAT IS MY POINT.

YES you can get burned out anywhere. DUH! ANYTHING can happen. BUT we are talking about a clearly identified known VERY HIGH FIRE RISK AREA.

Jst3751, jusr stay in your concrete bunker and hide from the real world, you'll be much happier there. Been burned out once, almost a second time last year, not close to trees and mountains, just high winds blowing. Your posts are not worth getting into a pissing contest.

So exactly what does that have to do with your apparent defense of building housing in clearly identified Very High Fire Hazard Safety Zones which was the point of discussion in my post?

Following your apparent logic in that, why should we then care that those driving under the influence will cause an accident on the road and kill someone since a vehicle accident can happen at anytime from any number of causes and kill someone?

Here is why:

Some one driving on the road under the influence has a higher probability and possibility of causing an accident.
Living in a Very High Fire Hazard Safety Zone has a higher probability and possibility of suffering loss due to a fire.
