A Little Yard Action, BNSF's Balmer Hump Yard
Author: DelMonteX

Had some time to spend in Seattle a week ago and got to check off a couple things off my "ideal list".

Here's a cut of cars being worked on the BNSF hump yard at Balmer, in Seattle.

That was neat to see.  How long was that sequence in real time?

The mini-hump there owe's it's longevity because the yard itself is on a 1% grade, something that would make flat switching hard and full of safty hazards.

Neat video! There is a fantastic brewery (Holy Mountain) with a tasting room right on the yard. It is fun to enjoy a nice beer and watch the trains roll by.

With my experience in hump yards, I ordered the wrecking crew after the first part of that video.  Exit speeds from the group retarder of 30 MPH!

Suprised to see those containers with no roofs. Are these trash or woodchip containers? Anyone know how they are used and for what commodity please speak up.
