99.999% of the population doesn't either. And they don't need to know either.
But someone who's job is governed by the rules had better know.

The story isn't exactly correct in that the unit has not been in storage since the dedication.   There are plenty of photos on rrpicturearchives showing the unit in freight service in 2006-2009 and again in 2011.

This is correct but I believe it has been stored servicable for the past few years at Jenks.

4141 Arrived in Spring, TX this morning and is parked inside the yard there.

A recession and, "read my lips, no new taxes," didn't do Bush any favors.  I doubt there was a path through the electoral college for Bush, whether Ross Perot ran, or not.

The bigger problem had been the loss of jobs in 1990-1991, but by the time the economists announced (in early 1993) that job growth in 1992 had been more than the job losses in 1990-1991, the election was history.    Clinton had managed to make the election hot topic the domestic economy, which was very wise on his part because the numbers showing the economy was improving in late 1991 and through 1992 were, due to the usual identification and reporting delays, not going to be made until after the election.

BTW, in nearly every state Clinton won, the difference between Clinton and Bush vote totals was usually about half to one third of the votes Perot received...  Arkansas was the only state where Clinton received more than 50% of the votes.  Overall Clinton got 43% of votes, Bush 38% and Perot 19%.  If 70% of the Perot votes (many of which were placed by independants and republicans) had gone to Bush, the results would have been a landslide the other way and Bush easily reelected.

So you are correct in that the economy was a factor, but the delay in recovery and Perot getting nearly 20% of votes is what kept Bush from having a second term. (that and not everybody realizing yet what a character Slick Willy was)

    Bush worked across the aisle, .  Republicans didn't hold majority in congress at the time, iirc .   He did  what was best for country and not himself.  He had to raise taxes and produced a surplus.

What really sucks is he was one of  the last vestige of greatest generation, which is almost gone, same age as my dad as well.   They saved us all.

Dan, you do remember correctly...   Bush had to work across the aisle as both the Senate and House were Democratic controlled - with the latter doing the appropriations (which were increasing domestically) leaving Bush with a choice of cutting military, raising taxes, or raising debt.
