Story Behind George HW Bush and UP Regarding 4141
Author: JLW2K

Does anyone know the story behind how George HW Bush and UP joined forces to create UP 4141?  Or perhaps have a link to the back story?

Thanks!

James the UP media release and all the info on that has been linked here in a few other earlier threads...
A lot of the information is from the fact sheets and videos in the UP page...  https://www.up.com/media/media_kit/bush41/index.htm

Going back to the 20:55 posting on 11/30 there has been a lot of good information posted here on Bush 41, UP #4141, the passenger trains, etc... (as well as several new threads asking questions already answered in earlier discussions)

The four bullet version of the story:
  • The Bush Library & Museum was doing an exhibit in late 2005 on the importance of railroads in US history
  • UP partnered with them on the exhibit (beliving it to be great idea)
  • UP and the museum staff worked to surprise Bush with the full sized new unit in Air Force One inspired paint to be displayed during the exhibit
  • Unit #4141 was dedicated to him at the ceremony 10/18/05, and he even got to run it

The Bush's have long and deep connections with the Harrimans.......Yes, the UP Harrimans,

George H. Walker and Samuel Prescott Bush were the dynasty's founding fathers during the years of and after World War I. Walker, a St. Louis financier, made his mark in corporate reorganizations and war contracts. By 1919, he was enlisted by railroad heir W. Averell Harriman to be president of Wall Street-based WA Harriman, which invested in oil, shipping, aviation and manganese, partly in Russia and Germany, during the 1920s. Sam Bush, the current president's other great-grandfather, ran an Ohio company, Buckeye Steel Castings

Was 4141 painted by WSOR at Horicon? I know they did the heritage paint jobs for UP.

Thanks for any info!
