Oops, per Hot Water’s correction below, they SERVED in the Navy and because not for 20 years, are not “retired” from the Navy. Sorry about that.

Carol,

I thought one had to serve at least 20 years to "retire" from our military services. Thus, they are both former Navy veterans, but surely can't be "retired".

At any rate, I'm sure glad that someone on the UP worked THAT crew-call properly!

But do they meet LGBTQ and ADA parameters and do they represent certain ethnic groups?  As we all know, inclusiveness is important to a lot of people.  Recall what we saw after 911 when the photo of the three Caucasian male firemen raising the flag at Ground Zero was determined not to be "diverse" enough.

I understood you need 20 for the pension, etc. But you can retire at any time.

Not really. You just don't reenlist anymore, thus that is NOT "retiring".

You can retire from the military with less then 20 years of service. It's a medical retirement.

True but, I'll wager that the two individuals on the UP crew, were NOT "medically retired".

Female engineer.  Male conductor.   Both ex-Navy and both many years on that line.

Interesting that you mentioned ADA...   Bush 41 was the President that signed that after it passed both houses with bipartisan support...   (When was the last time we saw bipartisan support?)

At least a few years ago. I retired with 18 years in. Got full bene's but only 48% of highest paygrade held honorably. They at one time offered early retirement to certain rates and paygrades, all in order to clear out some of the higher paygrades (ie: E7 and above) in certain rates to open up advancement opportunities for the rest. My rate in NAVY was a Parachute Rigger, Pretty much locked up at E6. The Navy was advancing only 1 E6 to E7 each exam cycle yearly. When ya have to compete with 275-300 others vying for that one spot, you're s×$! better hadn't stink bad. No regrets tho. Enjoyed my time serving our great country. These 2 crewman on the 4141 deserve a well earned attaboy for the opportunity to perform once more with honor and respect for such a highly regarded and respected man. Just my input. UP 4141 would have to be heavily prepped before it can be put on permanent display inside, if that is the plan, as in get all of the oil, fuel and coolant out of it. The prime mover can be removed, but it would almost seem to be cheaper to replace the fuel tank with a new one than to try to boil the existing one out. No matter what they do, it will almost have to return to North Little Rock. Anyway, does anybody know if it will be a stripped shell or not? === === = === JLH

Very impressive Union Pacific funeral train used today, but if you watched the entire funeral service
there was something even better: the pipe organ playing in the Houston church at the conclusion 
of the service.

Lol!! I noticed that, too!! ( I played pipe organ in HS and college where I minored in music). Finding exceptional pipe organists is a challenge — very difficult to master. If you make a mistake, everyone hears it for sure !!

Yes, from one retired engineer I give attaboys to the crew that handled the train. I had heard that HGW Bush always wanted to be ontime and from what I saw yesterday that train was stopped at College Station at exactly the posted arrival time, no later no earlier. That is a great job by the crew ad railroad.

Well! I really hope one of the women was an LGBT black handicap woman. UP needs to cover all bases. BTW...SP/UP had an agreement that they could handpick the crews for any speical trians. The word "Special Train" was really abused by the company officers.

I'm sure the selection of the crew was done in a way which would honor Mr Bush, and Union Pacific.   From what I saw, they did so, admirably.
 

I agree.  The pipe organ was spectacular.  The entire service was elegant, dignified and totally appropriate for a person with the accomplishments and service of President Bush.  Being ex Navy (Seabees) I was especially pleased to hear the Navy Hymn played on the great church organ.
