One shot; that is all I got today
Author: 2ebright

Cabin fever got the best of me this week, so I managed to escape to my favorite train watching spot; Silver Zone Pass in eastern Nevada. I posted some shots of the UP Wendover local that I encountered on the trip to Wendover yesterday. Today I wanted to go off road out to the Arnolds Loop area on Silver Zone Pass and try to get a “do over” of a shot that I did several years ago. So, today, the ground was snow covered and mostly frozen right at the surface. 4WD was a must; I actually never took my Jeep out of 4WD at all today. The Silver Zone area is only rarely visited by anyone except a crazy railfan, occasional hunter or rock hound. I practically never see anybody and today was no exception. I used to be able to get my Jeep right to my photo spot. But some gully washer storms a few years ago washed out the “road” badly and now I have to park and hike about a half mile. I got to the area just after daybreak and did not see my first, and only, train until 2PM. Such is the traffic level on the UP Shafter sub these days. Nevertheless, the sun was shining brightly, no wind and around 15-20 degrees.  I got my shot (#1 below). It was the GMGLTR-02 (Grain-Milling-Council Bluffs-Traver, CA).  As I was leaving  I encountered this nice buck (#2) That was it; only one daylight train and one buck for this really short-light time of year.

I was out running around in Pilot Valley with some others on Tuesday, we came close to getting stuck partway up the base of the peak in your shot.  I made a day trip to Salt Lake yesterday, actually a busy day on the old WP....we passed two westbound grain trains yesterday morning, one just west of Ola and the other just east of Knolls, then last night we say two more westbounds, one near the Pilot Peak mine and the other in the Shafter area.

Nice shots as always Dick.  Thanks for posting!  And there is actually quite a deer herd that winters in the Silver Zone pass area...

Both great pics, and thanks for the effort.  I know how difficult it is to get in there.  Same with places west of there, like Shafter and Hogan tunnel.

Wow that sure beats your basic overpass shot. That's a beautiful location and well worth the effort.

I can't address the WP days but during 1990's the old WP running 20+- trains a day on the line.

Dick... Both shots are great! Thanks for sharing and it's sad the Shafter Sub is down to one train a day in the daylight...
