Western Railroad Discussion > What is it?Date: 12/12/18 19:19 What is it? Author: ns2557 Down in Kansas City Mo today, came upon this one. MJRX 2. Info I have found syas it's an NW2. And from the frame down, it appears to be an NW2 Phase V. Rounded gussets are the biggest give away. The poling pockets are perhaps another clue.
But from the frame up, we have some conflicts. First and foremost. Long hood appears to be either an SW9 or SW1200. 8 louvered doors, hood latches and a full front grille. (NW2 had a half grille). Transition from hood to cab front is also another clue that perhaps the hood was changed out. NW2 has/had a 2 step drop to cab front on early models, but the Ph. V had a straight slope to cab. Cab windows are also not conforming to NW2. These appear also to be SW9/SW1200 type cab windows as the NW2 had larger ones. So is this an NW2 or a later SW9/SW1200 type? Rosters I can find list it as an NW2. I say not so fast. BTW, in the front headlight the number boards have 513 in them. BN had an NW2 with that nmbr but this one here is supposedly ex UP NW2 1022. Anyone help with this one? Thanks. Ben. (Taken in KCMO on 12-12-2018) Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/12/18 19:20 by ns2557. Date: 12/12/18 19:32 Re: What is it? Author: callum_out Looks like a garden variety SW1200, cab is key, NW2 had the radiused window.

Regards, Jim Evans Date: 12/12/18 19:46 Re: What is it? Author: ns2557 Out,That's what I thought too. But looking at the other spotting features of the SW1200/SW9 the frame and down doesn't match up. That and the few rosters I could find for MJRX list it as an NW2. Ben

Ben Posted from Android Date: 12/12/18 20:35 Re: What is it? Author: callum_out Ben, the headlight does look NW2 vintage, could be an NW2 with a re-cab repair, other than that
looks like an early SW1200 or 9. Out Date: 12/12/18 20:41 Re: What is it? Author: CPR_4000 ns2557 Wrote:

Could have been rebuilt at some point after a wreck (see below). Utah Rails website roster notes say: "UP 1022 was wrecked; sold to Inter-City Metals, Portland, Oregon, in February 1979; sold to Agrico 2, Williams, Oklahoma, later to Agrico AAX2 at Verdegris, Oklahoma, by May 1980." From the SW9 on they have square top doors.
Date: 12/12/18 21:23 Re: What is it? Author: calumet Here's an NW2. Note the smaller radiator grill at the front and the small vents on the hood above the lower ones. Your shot is not of an NW2.
Date: 12/13/18 06:21 Re: What is it? Author: LocoPilot750 Date: 12/13/18 07:04 Re: What is it? Author: CPR_4000 It's a rebuilt NW2. After it was wrecked on UP it apparently got an SW type hood and cooling system. NW's had 2 small cooling fans mounted side by side, hence the rectangular grill. Later SW's had a single large (48"?) cooling fan with the more square grill.
Date: 12/14/18 21:41 Re: What is it? Author: TomG Yes they did. Also you can see the larger grill has been spot welded to the hood. SW9/1200 its bolted on. This has knuckle buster latches when an NW2 had door handles. Its definatly a rebuilt NW2 with replacement hood parts.
