Author: docgrommesh

Finally, is the name of this video... ;)  I have spent so many hours trying to get this video. I was either shut out, or changing batteries while one would come over. It was quite frustrating, but finally got this guy yesterday.
This is the UP overpass at Santa Fe Junction crossing the Kansas River. 1-5-19 as the sun was setting quickly. Thanks for watching and enjoy the view!

Excellent! I've abstained from getting into video for years. But the good doctor is starting to make a little crack in that wall.

By the way, did somebody say Flint Hills?? :-)

Great video. I was there at the junction last summer, and saw twelve trains in two hours.

Thanks Lance!  My boss told me the other day to take some time off, and this is my slow time anyway.  I have a couple projects this week that once I get the guys going I should be able to break free.  I will look at the forecast and PM you.
The good Doctor

Amazing you can go so far and rock steady . You transition so well between panning and
pacing !

How long did that train take to get through there before the overpass?

Since I am not sure on the history of what this looked like before the overpass was built I was wondering how long that train would have taken to go through there with all of the diamonds needed and clear signals from the other rail roads.

Ok I see what you mean.  So this area is run by the (KCT) Kansas City Terminal Railway.  They direct all the traffic that goes thru quite a few junctions in KC.  With all the traffic that runs thru here I don't know how they do it even with the flyover's.  I am sure it would be a bottleneck for the movement of trains all thru the midwest and beyond if they weren't there.  So if they weren't it would take so much time, and I have no idea how long but I can't even imagine.  I posted a video on my YouTube channel of 4 trains going thru the Junction at once.  If you would like to watch it "docgrommesh" is my YouTube channel name if you want to search it.  The video is about 15 minutes long so I wasn't able to put it on here.  I think on TO you can only post around a 5 min video.  I will put the link on here but you will have to copy and paste it to your browser.  TO doesn't do links to YouTube.  To answer your question though it would take forever and I am not even sure if there could be anyway to do it without the flyovers now days.  After the UP train went over the bridge in this video, I got 4 BNSF trains going thru all at once which I didn't even know was really possible.  I am going to try to make a video on it.

Thanks so much for the comment and I hope I answered your question.  Maybe someone else can chime in as well.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOYGw0qDtJE

Great video. Love this location, trackwork is crazy.
Just curious! Does anyone know what the stacks are on the bridge piers?

Super!!!

I have always enjoyed photos and now videos of what we always used to refer to this structure as the "Kansas City Terminal High Line". I rode over it numerous times on the Union Pacific Domeliner "City of St Louis" and Union Pacific "Portland Rose".  Besides Union Pacific passenger trains, It also carried the Missouri Pacific passenger trains like the "Missouri River Eagle"; plus Rock Island trains such as the "Golden State", "Twin Star Rocket", "Imperial" and so many other trains from those railroads.

I have never seen the entire line over the Kansas River from this bird's eye view, so this is very exciting.  Thank you!

The silver cylinders?  They are a lift mechanism installed after the 1951 Kansas River flood.  Many mistakenly believe the bridge may be raised to allow navigation, but that is not the case.  The bridge may be raised to allow flood water to past underneath without the bridge causing an obstruction.

Outstanding! I have been to Santa Fe Jct. and along the route of that train on the high line many times over the years. But I never thought I would ever see it from such a perspective. Some mighty fine flying and camera work there, too -- that area is a maze of power lines, towers and other obstructions, as well as some sharp topography. Well done.

Thanks for a wonderfully unique view of one of the busiest rail junctions in the nation -- one that every railfan should put on their bucket list.
