Western Railroad Discussion > Winslow's Sunset and Belt of Venus Part One

I have some trepidation publishing these shots due to Mr. Clark's excellent advice to improve our train photography but I was at the overpass on the west end of Winslow last month. As you can see, the raking afternoon light was perfect for a train shot. Sadly, as you see in the second and third photos, the necessary train arrived just a little late. Fortunately, Venus's Belt framed the eastern horizon nicely. (That's in Part Two since the computer will only allow me to upload three shots at a time. )

Instead of making 2 indivdual posts - you can hit "reply to this message" on your original post and add 1-3 more pictures (multiple times for that matter).

Your pictures look fine to me. Everything is in focus and composed nicely. Todd was refering to posters who post out of focus, poorly composed shots.   

Kent, thanks for sharing a really nices series with a real southwestern feel to it.  Your first shot looks like a painting, nicely done.

Kent, it is nice to know that someone listened in a science class or astronomy class.  Perhaps a classical mythology class.  The area below the belt is the Earth's shadow in space.  It creeps upward as the sun goes below the western horizon.

Your IOTD winner is one awesome image! One of the best I've seen in almost 8 years aboard TO. Composition. Balance. Color. All A+. A very large print should hang on a museum wall somewhere...

Gorgeous stuff!  It is hard to go wrong with great light like that.

One of my thoughts is, I guess this could be a boring run for the crew...65mph, mostly straight. But then, look at the roller coaster terrain they have to deal with, could make it a bit more interesting.

Some aspects of the run are borning: climbing is borning; being a conductor on that run is borning. It's probably one of a few most challenging Subdivisions on the system for an engineer. It's a giant, winding rollercoaster-- elevation changes-- 4850' up to 7200', then below 600', it's definitely not all 65. From the photos, once you top over West Winslow, you're 40 to 70, then 65, 50, 35, 40, 35, 55, 50, 40, 35, 40, 45, 65, 70, 45, 50, 70, 45, 50, 70, 45, 50, 55, 45, 60, 25, 40, 55, 70, 60, 55, 40, 35, 60, 70, 55, 45, 55. 
Now the adjoining Gallup Sub is mostly 70. It's the subdiv. where Southern Transcon trains make up lost time and get sorted out.

In a way alpenglow, I was fortunate to see it several times while backpacking in the West.
