EFRX (Eastside Freight Railroad)
Author: tvh25

Hi,  does anyone know the current track condition and class of Eastside Freight?  Especially on the North end?   Hopefully none of it is exempt, yet I suspect the North end is.

Thanks,   Tom

I think you mean "excepted"...would imagine the whole railroad is excepted class track ... unless they haul passengers or lots of hazmat there is no reason for a shortline running 10 mph to be anything else.

If you read all the STB filings the first question that comes to mind is, "Are they in business or not?"

They are in business.  A few months ago they got a new customer in Woodinville.

That's good to hear, they've had some real legal struggles from the trail nazis,

Fantastic...… but the question is if the line is officially designated EXEMPT by the FRA? I suspect it is, but waiting to have someone confirm that who is in the know.

Why are their reporting markings end with and X? I that was reserved for private railcars.

EXEMPT from WHAT? If they have bridges or crossings or hours of service employees they come under the FRA! They may be considered a switching contractor hence the "X" on the end but I.m sure the FRA visits them regularly.

Probably not at the moment because of the government shutdown....

But in all seriousness, mistaking "FRA Exempted Track" and "FRA Excepted Track" is a common error. No reason to get too snarky about it...

Not getting snarky...just setting the record straight from a professional railroader who deals with the differences on a regular basis!

Exactly, and thank you for doing so, Mr. Samuels.  I suspect someone sees those "Exempt" signs on some railroad crossings and is mixing apples and oranges.

Isn't "exempt" on a crossing an indication that vehicles normally required to stop no longer need to do so?
IE, the line is out of service and no rail traffic is expected, or that any rail traffic requires stop and full flagging
of said crossing?

Exempt signs on a crossing mean that school busses, hazmat carrying vehicles and the like do not have to stop as they need to do at crossings that are in service as in "THIS VEHICLE STOPS AT ALL RAILROAD CROSSINGS" as seen on the rear of oil tankers and propane trucks.

The actual roadmark is ECYR, by the way.  They're still running.

Lots of operating guys use 'exempt' instead of 'excepted', in my experience.  Your milage my vary.
