Author: slacks

Eb CBBI is in the hole at Wilton Ia waiting for it,s wb counterpart. Two Geep 38,s lead two GE,s on a snowless winter day. BICB arrives with a like consist of geeps and GE,s. Some GP-38,s have been sold off but most of the fleet remains.

Great pics, but isn't the leader of the first train one of the company's SD38-2s?  Looks like #151.

Rich, I agree the first train has an SD38-2 leading but I thought the number was 154.  The ex-Reserve Mining
engines are still around but like the GP38-2's, the trouble makers have been sold off.

Nice shot, slacks, thanks for posting.

Nice photos and catches!   Any idea where the two Alco's are now that they sold in the late 90s?

Are you talking about the M420Ws?  If so, those went to the Southern Railroad of New Jersey (SRNJ).

I actually forgot about those units.   The C420 and RS36.   Last photos were at grain elevators I think, still in their same paint schemes from IAIS

All eight of the IAIS' SD38-2s were ex-Reserve Mining (RM had nine, they all were sold to GATX/LLPX and the only one that didn't go to IAIS is on Progressive Rail in MN). The first four, 150-153, were purchased outright, 154-157 were leased. When the most recent three ES44s were delivered (514-516), the 154-157 were returned to the lessor.

The 154-155 went to South Shore Freight and are now CSS 804-805. The 156-157 were (I think) re-leased to a grain operation in Canada but at least one of them was recently spotted returning to the Lower 48.

A lot of people are speculating that 150-153 will be leaving once the three additional ES44s (should be 517-519) arrive late this year, but traffic on the IAIS continues to increase and borrowing power from connections is commonplace, so they may still be needed after all.

As for the 22 GP38-2s (700-721), the 704, 706, 709 and 717 were sold to a leasing company. Why those four specifically, I have no idea, but perhaps they were "troublemakers" as you said. IAIS 713 sits damaged in Council Bluffs with a bent frame, likely never to run again. IAIS 720 is on lease by the railroad to ADM in Des Moines and AFAIK is still maintained by IAIS. This leaves a possible 16 units available for service.

Meanwhile, GP38 601 remains on the roster as mother to slug 650. I was told the 601 received a major overhaul and wiring upgrades just before the decision was made to get rid of all the non-Dash-2 units, so it was worth keeping around.

The OCD in me would have sent the 601 to ADM and mated the 720 to the 650, as the 721 is the mother to slug 651, but that is probably why I am not the CMO for the IAIS...

Thanks for the info, NZ, as I had wondered what happened to the ex-RM units.  However, if you look carefully at the first
shot, I SWEAR that's 154.  Really.  Let me know what you think!

Nick,

I thought it was the 154 as well, and initially had it that way in my comment.  However in looking at the IAIS fan page:

http://www.iaisrailfans.org/info/Locomotives

They showed the 154 as being returned, and the 151 as being active - so I edited my comments for the 151.  Maybe just something else in the frame looking like a diagonal in across the '1' digit?
