UP El Segundo Local At Abandoned Hawthorne Mall
Author: erielackawanna

Union Pacific's LOW20 El Segundo Local passes under the old parking lot bridges of the abandoned 1980s Hawthorne Mall in Hawthorne CA with a damn long train of cars from Chevron.

That's awesome. Great example of different focal lengths too. That mall is neat. Wonder when it will be redeveloped. Any train stations nearby?

Honestly, that place creeps me out, it's especially spooky at night.  There have been many plans to redevelop the place, but nothing ever seems to come of it.  The current plan is to demo the old 1970's era building, and have an open air farmers market/outlet mall.  We'll see.  Also the city (or whoever still owns it) makes quite a bit of money using the parking garages and interiors for filming...

Closest station is the Hawthorne/Lennox station on the Green Line, about a mile north...

As a commercial real estate man, I got curious about Hawthorne Mall & looked up the ownership.  (City of Hawthorne is not the owner.)
Whups! Looks like the owner is having a bit of difficulty with ethics and the law.

Similar to many malls, this one's dead.  There is too much retail real estate in the United States: 23 square feet for every man, woman and child.

I went to that Hawthorne Plaza. in the mid to late 80s
And it was really nice, alive and a happening place at the time.

Its sad to see this mall and a few others dying of a slow death.
The new malls that are being built. Do not have the same old feel.
the old malls had.
