Western Railroad Discussion > OT-A-10 Warthog Broomfield, CODate: 02/17/19 04:15 OT-A-10 Warthog Broomfield, CO Author: cozephyr Rare catch former US Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II, nicknamed the Warthog, was moved at National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) at Rocky Mountain Metro Airport, Broomfield, CO, 15 February 2019. Plane was flown into Colorado about two years ago for severe weather project (flying into thunderstorms). However, funding was pulled and AF 80-212 A-10 modifications were never applied.

BB Date: 02/17/19 09:21 Re: OT-A-10 Warthog Broomfield, CO Author: railstiesballast The problem with the A-10 is/was that it was assigned to the Air Force.
It isn't the fastest, most lethal dogfighter available. And the USAF is all about fighting other air forces (in their dreams, of course they do ground attack far more often). If the US Army and USMC had taken over the A-10 I think the program never would have been scrapped. I attended an air show when an A-10 was making 180 degree turns within the width of the runway, that is how manuverable it is! Thanks for sharing. "In January 2016, the USAF was "indefinitely freezing" plans to retire the A-10 for at least several years. In addition to Congressional opposition, its use in anti-ISIL operations, deployments to Eastern Europe as a response to Russia's military intervention in Ukraine, and reevaluation of F-35 numbers necessitated its retention.[135][136] In February 2016, the Air Force deferred the final retirement of the aircraft until 2022 after being replaced by F-35s on a squadron-by-squadron basis.[137][138] In October 2016, the Air Force Material Command brought the depot maintenance line back to full capacity in preparation for re-winging the fleet.[139] In June 2017 it was announced that the aircraft "...will now be kept in the air force’s inventory indefinitely."[140][141]" Date: 02/17/19 13:16 Re: OT-A-10 Warthog Broomfield, CO Author: 1019X Neat aircaft, what is going to happen to the one at Broomfield?

The A-10 was designed for ground support, not air superiority. It provides a ballistic missle and bomber deterrent, keeps a watch and chases away intruders, provides worldwide satellite communications, electronic and photographic reconnaissance, materiel operational support and much more. I actually have fixed 212...the very same aircraft in your pic a time or two.
Ray Date: 02/18/19 08:59 Re: OT-A-10 Warthog Broomfield, CO Author: railstiesballast My apologies for not following the news on the A-10, I just remembered some earlier "news" that must have been speculation.
And of course we all know there are many, many missions for the USAF, but I do believe the most glamorus one is air-to-air combat. Thanks to everyone who set me straight. They are VERY popular planes around here and we're proud to have them.
