GP38-2 on Z trains
Author: bakersfielddave

Flagstaff today spotted an eastbound at 1030 with 5800-2097-6796 on UPS trailers

then this afternoon at 1520 6796-2097-5800 came west also on  stacks and trailers UPS

2097 is still in BN green colors

Winslow would have been the turn around i guess for this set of units

I wonder how often GP38-2, GP39-2, GP40, GP60, SD40-2,SD45-2 (rebuilt),  B40-8W type units get on transcontinental freights like Z trains? Apparently it happens from time to time. Nice!

Poor thing headed east, felt the cold weather and snow, and say "I'm going back to sunny California!!"

Most likely not, GP units below GP50 class are by rule not allowed to be used for power and must be isolated when the lead locomotive in the consist is a modern high horsepower locomotive.

This is the B-PHXLAC. this train usually diverges onto the ARZC at Matthie for the run to California, but sometimes it runs up to the Seligman Sub. Since the switch at Williams Junction opens to the east, any California bound trains from Phoenix have to stop at either Canyon Diablo, Winslow or someplace like that and swap the power to the end of the train to run west. I've seen this happen a few times when railfanning the Seligman Sub and its quite suproring, especally the first time, seeing an eastbound, and seeing the same train westbound a few hours later.

As for BNSF 2097, this unit has been in PHX for the past month or so on the various switching jobs around town. Its still wearing its as-built 1974 paint, complete with ACI tags and operating class lights, which were lit most of the time it was here.

regarding the paint would it have had a few green repaints in the 1970s and 1980s  during overhauls?  last repaint in BN green would have been...?

Buffer between the two Jacks who weren't getting along with each other. Joint is correct though; good example of low/high horsepower. The SD40 is allowed again though after a few years.
