Western Railroad Discussion > If you can't be with the train that you love...Date: 03/08/19 20:48 If you can't be with the train that you love... Author: Graybeard1942 ...then you just photograph the MofW gang. Today on the Union Pacific Valley Sub (CA) there were no trains. Driving into Red Bluff CA, I learned why the railroad was quiet.
UP had a large tie gang replacing wooden ties with more wood ties, working at Red Bank MP 221. Once upon a Southern Pacific time, Red Bank was a daily point of activity. No siding but two large spurs for setting out cars. One spur is still in good shape and the other in poor shape. It appeared that tie replacement was taking place on the main and on the first spur but I may be wrong. The soil was way too muddy for an old man to venture up close. Across from the hospital is a bluff that has been a good photo spot for years for southbound trains. Coming out of Red Bluff the track speed jumps to 70 mph from 45 mph and the engineers crank it up. The usual suspects.... Date: 03/08/19 20:53 Re: If you can't be with the train that you love... Author: Graybeard1942 Pretty much the usual tie gang stuff. The tie clean up crew appeared to be contractors while the track gang was all UP. I would imagine Uncle Pete will run the fleet through starting at sundown.

Back in the early 80's, Re\D Bank was the scene of a derailment. It was a westbound lumber train [SP ran east and wqestbound trains] if memory serves me correctly. Slides hidden at home of the mess. The Roseville derrick was brought up to help clean up the mess. LP or Louisiana Pacific had a big mill at Rad Bank at the time of the derailment. Not sure what all products where produced and I believe egg cartons was one of the by-products out of the plant. Hence, the need for the small yard that had switches on both ends of the tracks. Sounds like a number of switches have been removed if Red Bank is simply several spurs now. Date: 03/09/19 09:00 Re: If you can't be with the train that you love... Author: ble692 Josiah Wrote:

They started in Roseville around the beginning of the year and have been working north. Not sure how far they are going or the total number being replaced. Bravo! This is a form of photography we railfans don't do nearly enough of. If MofW is vital for the running of the trains we shoot, then it should be a vital part of our photo hobby as well. Well done! Lance/199 (aka DJ Sir L... and fellow Stephen Stills fan... ;^) Date: 03/09/19 09:13 Re: If you can't be with the train that you love... Author: callum_out Do they need to do all that work for the two 36,000 foot trains that they want to run a day at 18 mph?
