State Police on scene of a derailment on the Canadian River Bridge near Logan, NM involving 26 rail cars. No injuries reported. Wind was contributing factor in crash.  This track is part of Union Pacific's Tucumcari Subdivision.

NMSP pictures on Twitter show intermodal cars were blown off of high trestle. It looks like they were mostly empty.

I guess that the weather forecast for a once in a century storm and very high winds in that area means you keep running trains.  This is a shot of the wind patterns out in the area of the derailment.

For the last couple of hours the Amarillio NWS reporting steady winds at 55 mph with gusts to 79 mph.

I can see that happening. Wide open through there. Samson de Cimmeron outside of Liberal, another candidate

If it indeed occurred today, it was UPRR GSR.

UP's version of PSR...run regardless of high wind warnings received. If that's what sent these containers on a wild ride.

      Probably no derailment. Cars and containers were simply blown off the rail and headed straight DOWN as you can see in the photos. It has happened in the past on the Samson of the Cimarron east of Liberal, Ks too. Old railroad people knew about this but apparently the new kids are totally unaware maybe. Both bridges are out in the open with no wind breaks ( lots of tall trees to slow the wind ) so it makes it easy for this to happen. The Logan bridge may be 70 to 90 feet high, the Cimarron bridge is 113 feet high.

What is the maximum track speed on the high bridge at Logan without any wind warnings? 

In the past there have been BNSF trains blown of the viaduct at the Pecos River crossing in Fort Sumner, NM, and maybe at Vaughn, NM too, though I can't remember a specific occurrence there. However I photographed the remains of one train at Fort Sumner several years ago. I suspect eastbound BNSF trains were held at Belen. Don't know where westbound trains were held, maybe somewhere west of Kansas City.
