Traffic west of Grand Junction, CO
Author: hot_tub

I saw a recent thread about traffic over Soldier Summit, but it listed trains without times.  Does anyone here know if anything other than Amtrak 5 typically goes west in the afternoon/evening?  I am particularly interested in photographing at Thompson, UT.

Thanks in advance...

Coal trains from West Elk don't run on a schedule, so typically, the answer is no.  But, Amtrak is a start, and it will be in good light.

If you go out there for Amtrak, you will see action, and if the UP or BNSF provides any activity, you scored a bonus.  BSB

It’s going to be tough with the little traffic there is, and no schedule. The westbound BNSF train is might pass through Thompson in the afternoon, saw it pull into Provo the other night so that would have been a mid-afternoon train past Thompson. Other than #5, which is almost 2 hours late tonight, you’ll probably just be sitting trackside hoping for a UP coal train, and maybe catching the BNSF.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.
