Yep, Another chase of the Potash Local:}

A couple of weeks ago, I was contacted by a long time friend currently living in Alaska if I would be able to act as a "tour guide" and hike in with him and a couple of friends to the Corona Arch shot in Bootlegger Canyon on Friday May 10th. This location would be on Union Pacific's Cane Creek Branch near Moab, UT. When the day arrived, I ended being available but initially decided against driving out there to meet up with them due to predicted overcast weather and a pair of boring GEVO's assigned to the train.

However the chance to visit with an old friend and enjoy that Incredible scenery won out and I gave in:}

1) On the way out to Utah, I stopped to shoot the Eastbound California Zephyr approaching Mack, CO. This would be the only Sun that I would see all day!

2) Now in Utah, I drove out to the tracks on the mainline between the sidings of Sagers and Thompson on this horrible dirt road trying to look for some old Rio Grande era Intermediate signals. With the the Local rapidly approaching, I couldn't get to the signals in time so I tried for a picture that included these white flowers that were covering the Desert floor.

3) At Brendel, myself, the "tourists" and the train all arrived at the same time! We then drove straight down to the parking area and hiked to the photo location in Bootlegger Canyon in a light rain. The rain had cleared but the cloudy conditions were still present as the train arrived and thus Corona Arch was barely visible in the background.

Due to the overcast conditions, for the return trip on the Local I decided to hike up to a location near the Corona Arch trail head that would have been back-lit had the Sun been out.

4) A vertical shot with the Incredible rock formations!

5) Climbing the grade with the Colorado River in the background.

6) Between Seven Mile and Lee.

Great series of shots! Makes me want to fix the old 4x4 and get my tail out to Colorado! So much rail action new and old to take in.
That scenery never gets boring! Thank you for going out there and then sharing. I’ve become an old couch railfan!

Great shots - The cloudiness here seems better for toning down the extreme red colors of the rocks! === === = === JLH
