And UP had to take them all the way to North Platte to get them between San Jose and Boise?

Didn't a group of CalTrain F40s get sold to a transit agency in the East?

Out

No.  Only Amtrak's former Surfliner and Cascades F59PHIs.

I'd be interested to know what percentage of cars on manifest freight trains (whether special shipments like this one or otherwise) are misrouted, or take a route other than the most direct route to their destination.   (Of course, there may be any number of reasons why a car taking a less direct route might be advantageous to someone or other.) We hear about it often in various contexts here on TO -- would be cool to know how common, exactly, these cases are.

Caltrain F40PH 920 showed up in Sidney, NE for a short time when it was set out on the north track of the yard along with the string of stored units. Here it is on May 8, 2019.

920 is the one featured in that news item about the overhaul. That is truly impressive that they managed to get it to Sidney... from my loose (road-based) calcutations, SF to Boise is 650 miles or so, while Boise to Sidney is 850 miles. So... on a 1300 mile roundtrip, it only went (at least) 1700 miles out of the way. PSR in full effect!

I don't know what it is about moving locomotives on Class One railroads. Pretty much every movement that I have been aware of or involved in, the locomotives have pretty much taken a tour of their entire system, sometimes more than once, before being delivered to the railroad that is often anxiously waiting for it. Like the other poster said, makes you wonder how many freight cars get this same treatment.

As far as Roseville goes, for loads it hovers around 1-2%, for empties 3-4%. That's for being misrouted from their trip plan, which may not necessarily be the shortest routing.
