Western Railroad Discussion > Tank cars question on Washington & Idaho RRDate: 06/09/19 19:25 Tank cars question on Washington & Idaho RR Author: zaltwsp7 Hi, South of Spokane, WA where US hwy 195 crosses over the Washington & Idaho RR is a small yard with several long blocks of tank cars. My question is are they there for storage? As I don't know of any tank car customers in the immediate vicinity. I don't have photos of the placards but I'm thinking maybe oil tank cars?

JB Date: 06/11/19 15:54 Re: Tank cars question on Washington & Idaho RR Author: kyrasmus Refiners need to store the butane (and other "light" hydrocarbons) in the summer when the EPA's vapor restrictions don't allow them to be blended into gasoline. When salt cavern storage runs out, you leave it on a railcar and then unload it in the fall when you can blend again.
