Traffic Jam in Mandan
Author: bmarti7

I have posted pictures of the Mandan Yard when it was totally empty. Not today. Here's what I saw at lunch time (just on the east end):
  • Main 1, east pumps,BNSF 6700 east with the V-PTSLPC (Portland-Logistics Park Chicago)
  • Main 2, BNSF 9322 east, setting out bad-orders from the C-SCMGFA (Spring Creek Mine, Decker, MT, to Crystal Sugar at Grand Forks)
  • Yard: BNSF 5378 east, with the CSX 710 and KCS Belle 5074, making up their train H-LAUNTW (Laurel,MT-North town) [photo below]
  • Waiting to get in to the terminal: BNSF 9113 west with the E-SUCATM (Superior, WI to Antelope Mine near Gillette)
For aviation enthusiasts: The contrail is Envoy 3949, operating as American Eagle between Chicago and Calgary.

Thanks for looking

BB

Is this a normal visitor on the NP route?  I'd have guessed a through train like that sticks to the Hi-Line.

NORTH Dakota versus SOUTH Dakota. There is NO state of "Dakota"

From what I can tell, BNSF runs most of their loaded unit trains west on the hi line and empty east across the MRL and ND/SD. Anything that is eastbound, low tonnage, not on a super tight schedule, and will fit through the tunnels is probably fair game for the southern routing.

There was a territory of Dakota, but when it became a state it was divided into North Dakota and South Dakota.
