86' Hi Cube Boxcars in SoCal?
Author: 6088

Good morning,

I know back in the day when the 86' Hi Cube boxcars still roamed the rails I remember seeing them on Cajon and I know some occasionaly went down to San Diego for the SDIV, they would be filled with sheets of styrofoam to be unloaded at San Ysidro.  I am curious if anyone knows where in the LA area these cars would have been used.

Thank you,

6088

We used to get them on the UP in L.A. in the late 80's and early 90's. They went to (I think it was Zellerbach) in Bandini.-BMT

Thank you, would it be just low numbers of cars or would they get a lot of them?

On Santa Fe there was a sizeable Ford Plant in Pico Rivera which while in production, would get lots daily. SP had a couple of GM facilities on their railroad that got lots and there was a Chrysler facility on the LAJ railroad that got some but not sure which railroad interchanged them to LAJ?
JB

The two GM facilities were Van Nuys and South Gate also known as Tweedy.

Some other thread here suggested that toilet paper was an example of a bulky, light commodity that some auto parts cars carried after the west coast assembly plants were closed.
