Western Railroad Discussion > Denver to Reno Road TripDate: 06/15/19 09:46 Denver to Reno Road Trip Author: jbwest A friend needed company for a drive from Denver to Reno, so the two of us did a little train chasing enroute. The first two pix are during a brief stop at the Devil's Gate station of the Georgetown Loop. Then late the next day we had time to explore the UP east of Evanston and the third picture is a westbound just west of Altamont.

The coal train went into the hole at Silver Zone to let Amtrak pass and we were able to get the first two shots at Shafter. The next morning we got the shot of an eastbound emerging from Palisade Canyon. Notice how high the Humbolt River is, only a few days prior the Elko area had been subject to flood warnings. After a wet winter it was a beautiful trip with lots green valleys and snow capped peaks.

It is amazing how you can drive along and see one train after another, but once you find a nice spot with good light the railroad falls silent for hours. We spent one morning in Palisade waiting for an Amtrak 5 that kept falling down, and when it did come it surprised us by running againt the current of traffic with no hope of a decent picture. And while driving through Echo Canyon with beautiful light we didn't see a train anywhere close. C'est la vie.

------------------------------------------------------- > That Amtrak photo is spectacular! > Thanks. It is my favorite. I was surprised at how well the two pix at Shafter came out since it was right after lunch with the high midday summer sun that usually is pretty hostile. But the clouds and snow capped peaks made the picture. JBWX Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/16/19 08:52 by jbwest. ------------------------------------------------------- What dates or time of year? We left Denver on June 3 and arrived Reno on June 7, a little over a week ago. It was a wonderful time to travel that route with the snow capped peaks, green valleys, and rushing rivers. Eastern Nevada in particular was great. Among other things we explored the Ruby Mountains.
